When I first moved to the Brighton area I didn't realise there was a "separate" area called Hove. Not surprisingly as one runs into the other and to me it's the combination of the two that makes the area so varied and appealing. The question "do you live in Brighton" will often be met with the reply (tongue in cheek) "Hove, actually". But there were different billing authorities for the council tax, and different municipal logos. The separate signs on the sea-front indicated that east of the Peace Statue (opposite the end of Waterloo Street) was under the auspices of Brighton Borough Council and west of it the domain of Hove Borough Council - on pavilion blue and Brunswick green coloured signs respectively. | Bandstand on Brighton seafront in the 'pavilion' blue colour |
Brighton and Hove have now officially merged so
doubtless those signs will be replaced sooner or later
with bright new signs proclaiming our new union and
reassuringly watched over by the statue who once marked
the boundary between the two towns. Olive branch aloft,
she now marks their seam but Im sure she would wish
each side to preserve its own character offering
all townspeople the widest variety possible. |

This page is concerned with life west of the statue as there are many other more capable bodies (my fellow local reporters) to guide you through the streets that branch off eastwards. | A last glance as we move off westwards... |
