"Land and property . . . in Southern Rhodesia - a country of vast potentialities and rapid development - are investments which increase in value and yield handsome dividends. Whether you are interested in the town or in the country, we are able to advise you on all transactions to your advantage", advertised an estate agent in the book 'Rhodes & Rhodesia, The Man and his Monument', published in 1953 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Cecil John Rhodes' birth. The 19th Century entrepeneur and visionary had been determined to gain the riches of Central Africa for Britain and to spread her civilizing influence, and he ruthlessly pursued his dream.

20th Century white immigrants from Britain were encouraged to settle in countries of empire like Southern Rhodesia, and before and after World War II, individuals and families left for different reasons. For some sunshine beckoned, whereas for others good education and disillusionment with conditions in the UK were relevant. The Reflections of Rhodesia website is a collection of memories of four settlers who lived there. Between the years of 1938 and 1963, their families were linked by involvement with parish activities in the Anglican Church of St Margaret of Scotland, North End, Bulawayo.
