Brighton is on the south coast of England, not of Spain, but it does have its own, home grown flamenco scene, complete with guitarists, singers and dancers.  Together, a group of them have started up "Club Caracol", a monthly night of flamenco music and dance in The Royal Pavilion Tavern - if you're a Brightonian, you may remember it as "Shades".

Now, I don't know my Sevillanas from my elbow, but I am rather taken with this complex, rhythmic music and passionate, expressive dancing.  The fact that most people stomping away on the dance floor at Club Caracol had only learned the steps that evening from dance teacher Anna Leon made me feel less self conscious, but if you want to see it done properly, Anna performs solo several times during the evening.  Club Caracol is once a month, usually on the second Wednesday, from 9.00.  Entrance is £4.00, or £3.00 concessions.  The dance class is from 8.00 to 9.00.  It also costs £4.00 but includes free entry to the club.  Look out for the posters or phone Tony on Brighton 388418 for details.
